L-1 only works through an employment relationship you already have — it moves an existing executive, manager, or specialized-knowledge employee from a company abroad to that same company's US office, branch, subsidiary, or affiliate. It is entirely employer-driven: your employer decides whether to transfer you, files the petition, and controls the timing. L-1A (executive/manager) allows up to 7 total years in status; L-1B (specialized knowledge) caps at 5. A brand-new US office gets only 1 year initially and must show real, credible growth to extend.
Cost: $695 (small employer/nonprofit) or $1,385 (25+ employee employer) base fee, plus a $500 fraud prevention fee for first-time filers and the applicable Asylum Program Fee — roughly $1,195–$2,485 in total mandatory government fees for 2026 depending on employer size
