Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — 'settlement' — removes all visa conditions and time limits, and is usually the direct route to British citizenship after holding it for 12 months. It's a continuation of an existing visa, not a fresh application: how many years you need depends entirely on which route you're currently on (5 years for most work routes like Skilled Worker; 3 years for Innovator Founder and Global Talent's Exceptional Talent track — 5 for Exceptional Promise; 10 years under the separate Long Residence route for people without one continuous qualifying route behind them).
Cost: £3,226 per applicant (from 8 April 2026); optional priority service +£500, super priority +£1,000
