The full guide
This is the non-EU/EFTA student residence process — genuinely distinct from an EU/EFTA citizen's simple registration, since Switzerland is EFTA, not EU. You get an entry (D) visa from a Swiss consulate, then a cantonal residence permit (B permit) after arrival. There's no federal points test, and — importantly — exact financial thresholds and some procedural details are set per canton by the local Migration Office, not nationally, so the figures here are indicative rather than a single fixed nationwide number.
Cost: Embassy visa fee of roughly CHF 50–100, plus a separate cantonal Migration Office fee of approximately CHF 95 for the authorization enabling visa issuance.
