A common misconception worth correcting: researchers do NOT get a separate, exempt quota — you draw against the exact same national non-EU/EFTA pool as any other work permit (4,500 B-permits / 4,000 L-permits for 2026, unchanged from 2025). What genuinely differs is the labour-market test: since a February 2023 rule, STEM shortage occupations — including research and university teaching — can skip the usual requirement to prove no suitable local/EU candidate was available.
