Poland lets non-EU scientists conducting research/teaching at accredited public research institutions (universities, Polish Academy of Sciences institutes, research institutes) work without a separate work permit at all — the hosting agreement is the mechanism. Ministry-of-Interior-accredited institutions sign the agreement directly with you, and the institution is on the hook to cover the costs of your stay/return if you overstay illegally, so accredited institutions vet applicants carefully before signing.
Cost: PLN 340 stamp duty + PLN 100 for the residence card
