Skilled Migrant Category is built around a genuinely paid, skilled job offer rather than a pure points table — the wage bar is the real gate. Roles classified at lower skill levels (4/5) need to pay well above the standard median wage to qualify at all, a deliberate anti-exploitation design choice. Immigration New Zealand has announced further changes taking effect 24 August 2026, adding two new pathways (Skilled Work Experience, Trades and Technician) alongside the existing points-based one — check the current settings close to when you actually apply, since this route is mid-transition.
