Malta's Nomad Residence Permit is aimed squarely at remote employees, freelancers, and business owners who earn from clients/employers outside Malta. It's restricted to non-EU, non-EEA, and non-Swiss citizens. The income bar was raised on 1 April 2024 to €42,000/year gross (about €3,500/month) for new applicants — many older guides and blog posts still quote the outdated €32,400/year figure, which now only applies to renewals for people who first applied before the change. The permit runs 1 year and is renewable up to 3 more times (4 years total), and comes with a real tax incentive: 0% on qualifying remote-work income for the first 12 months, then a flat 10% from year two onward.
