On 6 December 2024 the National Innovation visa (subclass 858) replaced the old Global Talent Independent Program — a genuinely different, invitation-only process, not just a rename. There's no points test and no skills assessment, but you can't simply apply: you first lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI), and the Department only invites people it judges to have an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement — a materially higher and more selective bar than the old program. Who actually gets invited depends heavily on a priority-sector and priority-tier system set by ministerial direction, which itself changes over time (the framework under Direction 112 was superseded by Direction 120 on 25 July 2026) — check the current priority list directly rather than assuming last year's sectors still apply.
Cost: No charge to lodge the EOI.
