Skills in Demand (482) is the temporary sponsored work visa; Employer Nomination Scheme (186) is its permanent follow-on. Both require an approved Australian business sponsor — you can't apply for either without an employer behind you. 482 has three streams: Core Skills (the most common — your occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List, and salary must clear the indexed Core Skills Income Threshold), Specialist Skills (no occupation list, but a much higher salary threshold instead), and Essential Skills (Labour Agreement only, for shortage sectors like aged care and disability support). Two years in an approved sponsored role on 482 is the most common route into 186's Temporary Residence Transition stream; 186's Direct Entry stream is a separate path that requires a mandatory skills assessment instead of prior sponsored employment.
Cost: Approximately AUD $4,015 for the primary applicant (from 1 July 2026), plus roughly AUD $1,005 per dependent under 18 — confirm the current figure, since it's indexed.
